Creating Decentralized, Autonomous Systems by Embryomorphic Engineering

چکیده

Exploding growth in computational systems forces us to gradually replace rigid design and control with decentralization and autonomy. Information technologies will progress, instead, by“meta-designing” mechanisms of system selfassembly, self-regulation and evolution. Nature offers a great variety of efficient complex systems, in which numerous small elements form large-scale, adaptive patterns. The new engineering challenge is to recreate this self-organization and let it freely generate innovative designs under guidance. This article presents an original model of artificial system growth inspired by embryogenesis. A virtual organism is a lattice of cells that proliferate, migrate and self-pattern into differentiated domains. Each cell’s fate is controlled by an internal gene regulatory network. Embryomorphic engineering emphasizes hyperdistributed architectures, and their development as a prerequisite of evolutionary design.

Growing Fine-Grained Multicellular Robots

Engineers are torn between an attitude of strong design and dreams of autonomous devices. They want full mastery of their artifacts while wishing these were much more adaptive or ‘‘intelligent.’’ Today, while we must still spoon-feed (program, repair, upgrade) our most sophisticated computer and robotic systems, insatiable demand for novelty has created an escalation in system size and complexi...

The Self-Made Puzzle: Integrating Self-Assembly and Pattern Formation Under Non-Random Genetic Regulation

On the one hand, research in self-assembling systems, whether natural or artificial, has traditionally focused on pre-existing components endowed with fixed shapes. Biological development, by contrast, dynamically creates new cells that acquire selective adhesion properties through differentiation induced by their neighborhood. On the other hand, pattern formation phenomena are generally constr...

Suggested New Voltage and Frequency Control Framework for Autonomous Operation of Microgrids

Decentralized control strategies are popular candidates in microgrids control because of their reliability and performance. Conventionally, droop control (as a main decentralized strategy) is been utilized in order to prevent permanent droop of voltage and frequency after change in loads and also to share generated power between distributed generation units. In this paper, a new droop control s...
